The Program in STS is pleased to announce the call for nominations for the L. Dennis Shapiro (1955) Graduate Fellowship in the History of African American Experience of Technology. All MIT faculty members are invited to nominate one current MIT graduate student.
A nominee for the Shapiro Fellowship should be studying the history of African Americans’ experience with technology. First preference will be given to students conducting research on the historical study of the African American experience with technology, with a preference given for U.S. history. Research on other underrepresented minority communities within the U.S. may be considered.
Eligible nominees are current students enrolled in a graduate program at MIT who will continue to be enrolled full-time as a student during the fellowship period.
The recipient will be awarded a nine-month fellowship (Fall 2025 and Spring 2026) which includes standard tuition, standard individual health insurance, student life fee, and standard stipend.
Nomination materials must be submitted separately by the faculty member and the student by Monday, June 2. Full details, including the nomination form and process, can be found here.
