STS.008 Technology and Experience

Technology and Experience
STS.008 | Program in Science, Technology, and Society | Spring 2018
Dr. Marie-Pier Boucher | Tuesdays & Thursdays 12:30-2pm

How do environments impact our daily experiences? This semester’s focus will be on “extreme environments.” From underwater to outer space, from earth-based gravity to levitation, from space analogs such as the Biosphere 2 to the European Space Agency’s Moon Village, how are extreme environments shaping the future of planetary life? How can we use design and technology to challenge the normative ideas that sustain sexual, racial and colonial orders? What kind of radical technological interventions are needed to respond to overwhelming conditions of densification, mobility, and environmental degradation? Assignments focus on close analysis of the social, political and anthropological implications of your favorite extreme environment.
