Moving pictures have played a wide range of important roles in the history of science and technology from the late-nineteenth century to the present. This course examines the role of movies (research films, documentary films, and fiction films) in both generating, and disseminating ideas about science and engineering. It introduces themes from the fields of STS, the history of science, and media studies. Assignments include periodic weekly response papers, in-class short presentations, a collaborative project, and a final paper. Evaluation includes class participation, attendance at screenings, as well written work, and presentations. No laptops.

Please note that the class will not have a midterm or a final, as it states in the MIT Subject Bulletin.
