IAP 2026 STS.S23: Bioeconomy Bootcamp | 1 credit
Monday, Jan. 5 & Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2026, 4-253

Materials, medicines, minerals, food, and fuels will increasingly be produced sustainably by biological organisms in the coming century. This transition to the bioeconomy will decrease our dependence on fossil fuels, reduce pollution of our waters and air, and preserve the biodiversity of our natural environment.
Students in will receive a concentrated version of the semester-long course just piloted by Professors Bathe and Scheffler in the fall semester of 2025 which will place the emergent bioeconomy within the context of its antecedent political, technological, and cultural developments and allow them to discuss and debate its future needs and impacts on society.
Contact Professors Mark Bathe, mbathe@mit.edu, and Robin Scheffler, rws42@mit.edu, with any questions.
