Biopolitics, Bioeconomies, Biopolises and the Twenty-First Century. Beginning with readings from Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, and Gilles Deleuze, this seminar will read contemporary works on the life sciences including: W. Anderson, Biehl, Jasanoff, Kay, Landecker, Ong, Petryna, Rabinow, Sanal, Sunder Rajan, and others.
Depending on the backgrounds/intrests of enrolled students, this class will be a mix of (1) readings from social theory and the ethnography of the contemporary biosciences, and ideally (2) explorations (ethnographic, oral history, archives) at MIT and Harvard with practitioners in these fields.
