Transfer Credit for Undergraduates

Students seeking transfer credit for subjects taken outside of MIT should contact the STS Undergraduate Academic Officer. It is strongly recommended that students speak to the UAO to get preliminary approval before taking the class.

For preliminary approval, students should provide the UAO with the following:

    • Name and description of class from course catalog
    • Name of the college/university where the class will be taken
    • Course syllabus (and list of readings and major assignments if not on the syllabus)

After the class has been completed, the student should submit the following to the UAO for final approval:

    • Transfer credit form
    • Name and description of class from course catalog
    • Name of the college/university where the class was taken
    • Course syllabus (and list of readings and major assignments if not on the syllabus)
    • Copies of at least one or two papers graded or ungraded written for the class
    • Transcript from non-MIT institution (an original, sealed transcript must be sent to the MIT Registrar’s Office)

Please note:

    • Students must receive a B- or better in the class
    • Advanced Placement (AP) credit may not be used to satisfy any part of the HASS Requirement
    • Subjects taken at a secondary school, whether in the U.S. or in another country, should never be granted transfer credit
    • Subjects taken at unaccredited and/or non-degree-granting post-secondary institutions should never be granted transfer credit

The STS UAO will evaluate the class to confirm that it is of the same caliber of an MIT subject.  The UAO has final say on the approval of transfer requests.

STS concentrators can use only one non-MIT subject to fulfill their requirement.  STS minors and majors can use two non-MIT subjects to fulfill their requirement. Exceptions may be granted for minors and majors who study abroad.

MIT students can cross-register for classes at Harvard University and Wellesley College, and therefore do not need to request transfer credit for those classes.  Requests for Harvard and Wellesley classes to be counted toward the HASS requirement should be submitted to the HASS Education Office (http://shass.mit.edu/undergraduate/hass/petition).
